Budget 2018 is likely to increase up to 15% for agri-research

To make rapid growth in doubling farmers’ income, the government is likely to increase the union budget 2018-19 for agri-research by 15% to around 8000 crores. Considering the budget of last few years where 10% growth occurred in the annual budget, this year’s growth could be predicted. The Union Budget for 2018-19 will be presented on February 1.

The funds will be used on priority areas with an objective to address the country's key farm sector challenges and make rapid growth in the direction of doubling farmers' income by using technology and innovation, the sources said.

In the next financial year, the DARE (Department of Agricultural Research and Education) is planning to concentrate on using technology and agri-innovations in particularly 150 backward districts and build capacity of farmers in tribal and rural India. The programs and conclaves on the use of agriculture, post-harvest technology, animal cloning for commercial application, genome editing in select crops and biofortification would be conducted
